Grubu

Umphrey's McGee, 1997'de kuruldu. Grup, folk, progressive rock, elektronika, bluegrass, jazz, rock, fusion, funk ve hatta klasik 'ın karışımından oluşan doğaçlama temelli müziği ile, 4. kuşak jamband olarak sınıflandırılıyor. Müziklerine mizah da katan bir Zappaesque yaklaşımları da var. Grup üyeleri South Bend, Illinois'daki Notre Dame Üniversitesinde tanışıp birlikte çalmaya başladılar. Grup üyelerinin hepsi virtüöz.

Grubun adı, grubun bestecisi ve gitaristi Brendan Bayliss'in uzak bir akrabasınından alıntı. 

Grubun Grateful Dead ve Phish'inkine benzer aktif ve sadık bir fan kitlesi var. Bunlar, Umphrey's McGee'nin konserlerinde yaptıkları kayıtları gruba gönderip, internette erişilebilmesine yardımcı oluyorlar. Grup böylece asıl doğaçlama yeteneğini gösterebildiği konser performanslarını izleyemeyenlere da sunmuş oluyor.
