Önceleri DDT adlı punk grubunda .çalan Luther
(gitar, mandolin, vokal) ve Cody Dickinson (davul, sampling), aralarına
basçı Chris Chew'ı da alarak, 1999'da North Mississippi Allstars
adlı grubu kurdular. Dickinson kardeşler, daha çocuk yaşlarda,
Fayette County, Tennessee'den, kuzey Mississippi'ye taşındılar ve burada Mississippi
Fred McDowell ve R. L. Burnside gibi country-blues müzisyenlerin
etkisi altında kaldılar. North Mississippi Allstars grubunun tınısı altında da
bu country-blues temeli yatmaktadır; ancak müzikleri, rock'u, estetik bir
alternatif yapıyı, ve bir jam-band tarzını da içermektedir.
North Mississippi Allstars, The Word projesinde John Medeski ve Robert Randolph ile birlikte yer aldılar, ve bugüne kadar 7 albüm ve 2 EP yayınladılar
