Dahi gitarist Joe Bonamassa, çocukluğundan beri Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton ve Jimi Hendrix gibi gitar çalmayı hayal ederdi ve daha 22 yaşındayken Epic şirketi ile kontrat yapmayı başardı.
Utica, New York'da doğmuş olan Bonamassa, Stevie Ray Vaughan'ı dinlediğinde dört yaşında idi ve sekiz yaşına geldiğinde B.B. King'in bir konserinden önce sahne aldı. Oniki yaşında New York eyaletinin kuzey illerinde düzenli olarak çalmaya başladı. Bu sırada, Miles Davis'in davulcu oğlu Erin Davis, Doors grubundan Robbie Krieger'ın gitarist oğlu Waylon Krieger ve Allman Brothers grubunun basçısı Berry Oakley'in yine basçı oğlu Berry Oakley, Jr.'un bulunduğu punk metal grubu Bloodline'a katıldı. 1994'te Bloodline'ın aynı adlı ikinci albümü çıktıktan sonra solo kariyer yapmaya karar veren Bonamassa, 2000 yılının yazında Jethro Tull'ın turnesine katıldıktan sonra stüdyoya girdi ve ilk albümü A New Day Yesterday 'i çıkardı. Bu albümün yapımcılığını Bonamassa'nın hayranı Tom Dowd üstendi. Davulcu Kenny Kramme ve basçı Eric Czar ile bir power-trio kuran Joe Bonamassa, albümün tanıtım turnesinden sonra yine stüdyoya girip ikinci ailbümü So It's Like That 'i kaydetti. Konserlerinden derlenen A New Day Yesterday Live albümünden sonra 2003'te çoğunluğu blues standartlarının yorumlarından oluşan Blues Deluxe'ı çıkardı. 2004'de yaptığı Had To Cry Today albümünü 2006'da yaptığı You & Me izledi. Daha akustik bir çalışma olan 7. stüdyo albümü Sloe Gin, 21 Ağustos 2007'de yayınlandı. Bunu 11 Aralık 2007'de çıkan Shepherds Bush Empire adlı bir konser EP'si ve 19 Ağustos 2008'de çıkan Live from Nowhere in Particular adlı çift CD'lik bir konser albümü izledi. 2009'da The Ballad of John Henry 'yi yayınladı. 2010'da ise Black Rock yayınlandı. 19 Ekim 2010'da ise 2009 sonunda yayınlanmış olan Live from the Royal Albert Hall DVD'si Audio CD formatında çıktı. Bir gün sonra, 20 Ekimde ise, Glenn Hughes, Jason Bonham ve Derek Sherinian ile başlattığı proje olan Black Country Communion'ın ilk albümü Black Country yayınlandı.
2011'de Glenn Hughes, Vince Gill ve John Hiatt'ın konuk oldukları stüdyo albümü Dust Bowl çıktı.
