1990'larda tribute albümleri çok moda oldu, fakat Jazz Is Dead'in Blue Light Rain adlı Grateful Dead konseptli albümü hepsinden farklı oldu.
Jazz-fusion virtüözleri, basçı Alphonso Johnson (Santana, Weather Report), klavyeci T. Lavitz (Dixie Dregs, Steve Morse Band), gitarist Jimmy Herring (Aquarium Rescue Unit, Frogwings) ve davulcu Billy Cobham (Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra), Grateful Dead klasiklerinin enstrümantal yorumlarını yaptılar. Dörtlünün diğer elemanları yeteri kadar ünlüydüler, ama bu grup gitarist Jimmy Herring'i de tanınmış müzisyenler arasına taşıdı. Allman Brothers Band'de Dickey Betts yerine çalmış olan Herring'in olağanüstü yeteneği, çalıştığı diğer guplar olan Aquarium Rescue Unit ve Frogwings'in pek ticari başarı elde edememiş olmalarından ötürü, pek görülememişti.
Grup, 1998 tarihli Blue Light Rain'den bir yıl sonra, yine Grateful Dead'in 1973 tarihli Wake of Flood albümünü, Laughing Water adlı albümde yorumladılar. Bu arada gruptan ayrılmış olan Billy Cobham yerine iki davucu -- Jeff Sipe ve Rod Morgenstein -- yer aldı. Grubun 2001 tarihli, üçüncü ve şimdilik son albümü Great Sky River, yine Grateful Dead temalı.
