9 Ekim 1944, Londra doğumlu John Alec Entwistle, rock müziğinin en etkili basçılarından biriydi.

1959'da henüz orta okulda iken, Pete Townshend'in de bulunduğu Confederates grubunda çalıyordu. Piyano ve korno eğitimi almıştı ve bir skiffle (caz ve country blues karışımı) grubunda çalan en eğitimli gençti. Roger Daltrey'in kurmuş olduğu Detours grubuna, Pete Townshend ile birlikte davet edildi. Bu gruba davulcu Keith Moon'un da katılması ile adları High Numbers, sonradan da The Who oldu. The Who 1964-1965 yıllarında kayıtlara başladı ve İngiliz rock dünyasının en önemli gruplarından biri olmayı başardı.

The Who ilk kurulduğunda, Daltrey ve Townshend gitar çalma görevini paylaşıyorlardı. Daltrey gitar çalmayı bırakınca, John Entwistle, alışılmış ritim gitarının yerini doldurmak için yüksek seli ve karmaşık bir bas gitar çalmaya başladı. Bası ile ririm dolguları ve karşı-melodiler çaldı ve sonuç olarak, rock müziğinde basın diğer çagılar kadar dikkat çekebileceğini gösterdi.

Bir bestekar olarak Pete Townshend kadar üretken değildi ama, hemen her Who albümünde, Townshend'inki ile tezat teşkil eden bir garip espri anlayışı içeren beste katkılarında bulundu. Entwistle'ın solo kariyeri de Townshend'e kıyasla daha düzensizdi.İlk solo albümü Smash Your Head Against The Wall (71) bir Who albümünü andırıyordu. 1972'de yayınlanan ikinci albümü Whistle Rhymes farklı bir çalışma oldu. John Entwistle bundan dokuz ay sonra yayınlanan üçüncü albüm Rigor Mortis Sets In ve 1975 tarihli Mad Dog'dan sonra altı yıl boyunca solo bir çalışma yapmadı. Bu süre içinde, 1978'de  Keith Moon öldü ve grup dağılma aşamasına geldi. Entwistle'ın 1981'de yayınlanan Too Late The Hero albümünden sonra, Who 1982'de son bir turneden sonra dağılma kararı verdi. Fakat Who fanatikleri buna çok tepki gösterdiler ve 1989'da bir turne daha planlandı.

1996 yılında, 1980 ortalarında kaydedilmiş The Rock adlı bir John Entwistle solo albümü yayınlandı. Bu yıllarda The John Entwistle Band adlı bir grup kurdu ve bu grup 1999'da Left For Live adlı bir albüm çıkardı.

Who'nun Quadrophenia, Kids Are Alright gibi soundtrack çalışmalarının müzik yönetmenliğini yapan John Entwistle aynı zamanda bazı Who ve solo albümlerinin kapaklarını tasarladı. İngiltere'nin en büyük gitar ve bas gitar koleksiyonuna sahipti.

John Entwistle 27 Haziran 2002'de, Who'nun yeni bir ABD turnesine başlamasından bir gece önce, Los Angeles'daki otel odasında kalp krizinden ölmüş bulundu...
